About the Play

A Doll’s House

Written by Basab Pradhan

Directed by Rita Bhatia

Jun 5-13, 2026

Sunnyvale Theatre

In a middle-class Bay Area home, Naina and Tarun look like the model Indian-American couple — good kids, a hard-won startup, Diwali around the corner. But a surprise visitor and a single act of desperation crack open the life they’ve built, exposing the bargains behind love, marriage and honor.

This contemporary Indian-American adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 play of the same name, is funny, sharp and quietly explosive — a play about money and power, devotion and control, and what it costs to become your own person.

Key Dates

Performance Dates: Jun 5-13, 2026

Venue: Sunnyvale Theatre

Auditions: Mar 14 (Monologues) and Mar 15 (Callbacks)

Run-throughs and Tech: May 16 to Jun 4

Rehearsals will begin in the week of Mar 15. To be considered for the casts of this play you should have good availability from Mar 15 onward and must be available during the full run-through, tech, and performance dates above.

This is a strong, actor-driven play. If we apply ourselves fully, it will be a rewarding artistic journey for everyone involved.

Auditions

In-person auditions will be held at our rehearsal studio in Santa Clara.

Monologue Auditions — Mar 14, 9am to 12pm

Each auditionee will be given an individual slot. For your audition, you will memorize and perform a monologue from the play which will be sent to you in advance. You must tell us which role/s you are auditioning for so we can send you the appropriate monologue.

Callbacks — Mar 15, 10am

At callbacks you will be asked to read from the script with other actors.

If you have been in the cast of a recent BADCo production, you may skip the monologue auditions and come straight to callbacks.

Whether you are coming to the Monologue Auditions or straight to Callbacks, you must fill out the audition form.

If you are not in town on the audition dates, you may submit a self-tape of your monologue.

Roles Available

The age ranges below are guidance only. If you can credibly play the role, we will consider you.

All roles, except Kevin are for actors who can play South Asian characters. The role of Kevin is open to performers of all races and ethnicities.

The play is being staged with two casts - a younger cast and an older cast.

NAINA (Female, late 30s-early 40s, late 40s– early 50s)

A devoted wife and mother who has spent her life accommodating the expectations of others. Intelligent, sensitive, and emotionally perceptive, she slowly awakens to the cost of her self-erasure — and finds the courage to claim her own identity. A role that demands deep emotional range and quiet authority.

TARUN (Male, late 30s-early 40s, late 40s– early 50s)

A successful tech entrepreneur who sees himself as progressive, loving, and rational. Beneath the surface lies a deep need for control, status, and moral certainty, which is challenged when his authority — at home and within himself — begins to unravel. Complex, charismatic, and unsettling.

RAJBIR (Male, late 30s-early 40s, late 40s– early 50s)

Tarun’s closest friend — witty, irreverent, and intellectually fearless. An oncologist facing his own mortality, Rajbir questions convention, faith, and dignity with humor and brutal honesty. A sharp, emotionally layered role balancing charm and existential weight.

CHARU (Female, late 30s-early 40s, late 40s– early 50s)

Naina’s friend — independent, empathetic, and quietly resilient. Having lived through her own disappointments, Charu serves as both confidante and catalyst, forced to confront the moral cost of loyalty and intervention. Warmth with an undercurrent of steel.

KEVIN (Male, late 30s-early 40s, late 40s– early 50s)

A talented but embittered professional whose life has been shaped by loss and resentment. Intelligent and emotionally volatile, Kevin occupies the moral gray zone between victim and antagonist. A role requiring restraint, intensity, and inner conflict.
