How far can a man pursue his art in a culture that doesn’t view dance as an acceptable male vocation?

The classical dance form of Bharatanatyam serves as the backdrop to this timeless story of two dancers – husband and wife –  who struggle with their ambitions in a society that shackles them with expectations and boundaries.

Mahesh Dattani, India’s foremost playwright in the English language, weaves a finely textured tale around the two central characters with both light-hearted, comic moments and high drama.

Dance Like a Man is a brilliant study of human relationships framed by the age-old battle between tradition and youthful rebellion. It was made into a film in 2004 directed by Pamela Rooks and won the National Award for Best Feature Film in English.  The cast included the ace dancer Shobana, Anoushka Shankar and Mohan Agashe.
